Navigating Uncertainty with Purpose

In my coaching work, I often sit across from people who are chasing big goals, athletes preparing for a major event, business leaders steering their teams through change, or individuals stepping into a new season of life.

This past week, I noticed the same theme come up in different conversations:
“I know I need to move forward, but I’m not sure where to go next.”
It reminded me that uncertainty isn’t a rare experience; it’s something we all face. And how we respond in that moment can shape what happens next.
Uncertainty is normal
When you’re chasing something important, you’re going to find yourself in moments where the path isn’t clear.
For an athlete, it’s the week before a big race. You’ve trained, you’ve prepared, but you still can’t control the weather, the conditions, or how the competition will show up.
For a business leader, it might be trying to grow the team or launch something new without knowing if it will land the way you hope.
Uncertainty isn’t a sign you’re doing something wrong; it’s a sign you’re in a place of growth.
Let your purpose be the compass
When the map isn’t clear, purpose is what points you in the right direction.
One client this week said to me, “I don’t know exactly what the next chapter looks like, but I do know the kind of person I want to be in it.” That’s the power of purpose; it gives you a way forward when you don’t have all the answers.
If you feel stuck, take a moment and ask:
Why does this matter to me?
Who do I want to become in the process?
Write those answers down. Come back to them often. They’ll help you keep moving even when you can’t see far ahead.
Four simple ways to move forward in the unknown
Focus on what you can control today – your effort, your attitude, and your preparation.
Keep your horizon short – Plan for the next week, not the next year.
Treat steps as experiments – Try, learn, adjust. Nothing has to be permanent.
Stay connected – Share where you’re at with a mentor, teammate, or coach. Fresh eyes bring a fresh perspective.
Walking forward through the fog
The truth is, you don’t need to see the whole path. You just need to take the next step you do see. That’s how athletes keep training when they don’t know the outcome. That’s how leaders make bold moves without guarantees.

Great timing with this article.
I like the plan for next week... not next year.
It's that first step to get some momentum.
thanks Emile.
